
The volcanic mountain summits of Ecuador provide easy access to high-altitude climbing with their peaks reaching over 20.697 ft. (6.310m). Ecuador's glacier-covered mountains straddle the equatorial zone of the planet providing relatively warm mountaineering environments and a variety of technical climbing challenges. The Andes is the world's second highest mountain range, spanning from Colombia to the tip of Patagonia in southern Chile.
Conically shaped Cotopaxi is Ecuador's most popular mountain to climb. Technically easy, yet approaching 19.000 ft, this mountain has set personal altitude records for thousands of climbers.
Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest peak, was once claimed to be the world's highest mountain by legendary explorer Alexander Humboldt, and in one way he is correct: due to the equatorial bulge of the planet, Chimborazo is the highest mountain in the world if you measure from the center of the Earth instead of measuring from sea level.
Cayambe, Ecuador's third highest mountain, is a more technical climb. Located directly on the equator, it is the highest point on the planet that intersects the equatorial line.
Antisana, Ecuador's fourth highest mountain and one of the country's most difficult climbs, is also one of Ecuador's most scenic peaks.
Even though highly accessible, these peaks require a high degree of fitness and some mountaineering skills are necessary for all of the itineraries below.

ACCLIMATISATION:
For EAI acclimatization is the most important factor in preparing for a high altitude climb. From experience we know that without proper acclimatization it is unlikely that you will have an enjoyable or successful ascent. In worse case scenarios, your body aches, very intense headaches occur and occasionally vomiting, hindering your ability to reach the summit. These symptoms will usually occur before even leaving the refuge. A lot of the guide books and tour operators will have you believe that mountains such as Cotopaxi (5897m) in Ecuador are a day at the park and can be accomplished in two days without acclimatization. This is not the case, climbing at such high altitude puts an intense pressure on your body and lungs, physically you tire faster and as there is less oxygen getting into your blood stream you become weak very fast. For this reason it is so imperative that you have sufficient acclimatization and are physically prepared before approaching high altitude climbing. Like the weather, the glacial conditions are ever changing , difficulty levels increase and decrease throughout the year that is why our programs are designed to allow you the right amount of acclimatization, building your strength, fitness and confidence through a series of gradual climbs and technical training before attempting any summits of the higher altitude glacial mountains.
CLIMBERS DIET:
A good diet whilst climbing at high altitude consists of what your body needs and will process most easily during your climb. This is important because certain foods will tire you out more than supply you with positive physical energy and endurance. At EAI we provide you with a lean, healthy and complete energy diet because we are aware and concerned of the benefits it has on the body and mentality of a climber.

pasta with a fresh vegetable sauce and tiny bits of chicken
pudding or jelly
herbal tea
This meal is full of carbohydrates that are easy to digest at high altitude and won´t tire your system. Herbal tea for good hydration ( and heat! ) and some dessert for a bit of sugar energy.
The food to avoid for us:
-any type of meat in large quantities
-rice
-corn
-bananas / platanos.
These types of food are heavy and difficult to digest at altitude, especially without the proper acclimatization. Stay fit and eat healthy for a good mountaineering life!
